Welcome to the cultural landscape Central Germany. Come with us on an expedition to the middle of Germany and into the heart of Europe. German and European history has been written between the rivers Elbe and Saale, between the Harz Mountains and the Ore Mountains for centuries. German emperors and kings resided here, poets and philosophers lived here, inventors and pioneers of the industrial revolution worked here.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich Schiller, Johann Sebastian Bach, Richard Wagner and Friedrich Nietzsche lived in the countries Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. Master builders and architects created excellent buildings – the cathedrals of the Middle Ages, the proud city halls of the renaissance, the splendid castles of the baroque. The Bauhaus in Dessau revolutionized modern building. Catherine the Great – tzarina of Russia – was born in Zerbst near Magdeburg and Marie Louise Victoire of Saxony-Coburg-Saalfeld, the mother of the British queen Victoria, is from Central Germany. Voltaire influenced the German dynasties in the 18th century. Gustav II Adolf of Sweden fell in the Battle of Lützen. In 1806 Napoleon defeated Prussia in the battle of Jena-Auerstedt and was beaten near Leipzig in 1813.

Central Germany also is a special natural landscape. Dark woods in the Harz Mountains, gentle hills in the Thuringian Forest and in the Ore Mountains, curt rocks in the Saxon Switzerland. Wide river meadows and untouched nature landscapes alternate with fertile fields and meadows.

The cultural landscape of Central Germany lies between the metropolises Berlin, Dresden, Nuremberg, Frankfurt am Main and Hanover. Pulsating cities like Leipzig, Dresden, Erfurt and Magdeburg and quiet small towns who owe their Romanticism to the half-timbered houses and dreamy lanes invite you to discoveries. Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia are castle landscapes. Important dynasties, like the House of Ascania and the House of Wettin, have written German and European history from here. Innumerable castles and stately homes show their power to this day.

The cultural landscape of Central Germany can be discovered in different ways – by car or bus, by bike or on foot. Explore this cultural landscape. I invite you to a journey on which you will discover Germany newly.
